Chapter 316
New Code Phrase

The instant the door opened, he was dragged into a dream?

Lin Qiye instantly realized that once the suppressive effect of the Town-Evil Stele weakened, Wu “Old Dog”’s power had returned to a terrifying level—being able to pull someone into a dream with a casual gesture would be a nightmarish ability in real combat. Even with his current strength, he hadn’t noticed it at all.

What realm was the man actually in? Infinity? Or… Klein?

“Do you know what’s happening outside?” Lin Qiye asked.

“I know a little.” Wu “Old Dog” nodded. “They’re here for me.”

That answer startled Lin Qiye; he immediately grasped the key point. “Their target is this asylum?”

“Mm.” Wu “Old Dog” slowly stood up. Beneath the messy bird-nest hair, his eyes were perfectly calm. “At present, almost no one in the Purification Chamber can stop them. This place will fall sooner or later… you should leave.”

“What about you? What will you do?”

“Almost no one can stop them… doesn’t mean I can’t.”

Wu “Old Dog” spoke softly, but his tone carried absolute confidence. He looked at Lin Qiye, waved gently, and the dream shattered in an instant.

Just then Lin Qiye seemed to remember something and hastily asked, “What’s today’s code phrase?”

Wu “Old Dog” gave him a meaningful glance. His figure gradually faded into the air, leaving only a sentence drifting at Lin Qiye’s ear.

“You already know the answer.”

……

In the empty corridor, Lin Qiye snapped back to his senses, mind still dazed.

He was standing outside the research room; through the clear glass he could see the busy researchers inside. Everything just now seemed never to have happened…

In the dream he had talked with Wu “Old Dog” for at least two minutes, yet only a few seconds had passed. Rather than calling it a dream, “spacing out” fit better.

“I know the answer?” Lin Qiye muttered, brows knitting tight.

The night before, Wu “Old Dog” hadn’t told him today’s code; how could he possibly know?

Besides, with the chaos outside, even speaking the right phrase might not get him out…

He shook his head, shoved the clutter of thoughts aside, and walked straight toward the exit. Whether by code or by force, the moment he’d knocked out an orderly and taken his appearance, he’d passed the point of no return.

Fingerprint, iris, work badge, password…

Lin Qiye passed each checkpoint with practiced ease. Under Merlin’s transformation magic he had become the orderly down to the last detail; every physical trait was identical—DNA would match. Turning perfectly into another person, another creature—such was the horror of Merlin’s sorcery.

After clearing every barrier he stopped at the familiar transparent door, heart uneasy; this was the checkpoint he felt least sure about.

“Night Watch Lin Qiye, please state today’s code phrase.” A deep male voice came from the speaker.

Lin Qiye’s pupils shrank!

He looked down at himself—still the orderly’s form—and was shocked. No one should recognize him like this…

Had he slipped up somewhere earlier? Had they found the real orderly unconscious in the toilet?

No, not that fast.

In the entire asylum, only one person knew his true identity…

He stared at the speaker, a bold idea forming.

“When the dark night finally falls…” the man’s voice intoned.

Hearing that, Lin Qiye was certain. He drew a breath and answered calmly:

“I shall stand before millions, blade to the abyss, dying the sky with blood!”

“Code correct. Safe travels.”

The voice cut off; a soft click followed as the transparent door slid open. Outside, night stretched black; distant buildings burned deep red, lighting a corner of the low sky.

“…Safe travels, huh.”

Lin Qiye remembered that every previous correct answer had earned “Code correct, you may pass.” This time it was “Safe travels.”

If he was right, the man handling the codes had been pulled into Wu “Old Dog”’s dream—so the one speaking just now had actually been Wu “Old Dog” himself.

So that was how he’d help him leave…

Lin Qiye stepped through the door, glanced back at the familiar asylum, eyes complicated.

“Better… not come back.”

He murmured, then turned and walked into the night.

……

Outside the Purification Chamber.

Second Seat flicked a finger; the ropes on the three snapped apart.

Shen Qingzhu stood, dusted himself off, and looked at the scarlet sky, eyes narrowing.

“Tied us up till nightfall… if I see that little fatty again I’ll flay him alive!” Fifth Seat rubbed stiff shoulders and yawned.

“Sleeping straight through while tied up is impressive in its own way,” Second Seat said coldly.

“Nothing else to do; might as well sleep.” Fifth Seat stretched, gazing at the distant chaos. “Oh, it’s lively. Time for us to join?”

“What do you think?” Second Seat snorted. “They’ve started inside; we press from out here, split their fire.”

He turned to Shen Qingzhu, half-mocking. “Rookie, you’re too weak. Just watch. If a missile turns you to ash, we’ll be punished for it.”

Shen Qingzhu said nothing, only nodded beneath his white fox mask.

“Suppressed to Infinity realm… but it’ll do.” Second Seat stretched his hands and tore a slit in empty space!

The other side of the rift was the Purification Chamber’s front gate amid the chaos.

Eyes glinting with killing intent, he slipped through; Fifth Seat followed.

The tear sealed behind them.

Shen Qingzhu lifted his head.

The next instant, a terrifying explosion erupted at the main entrance of the Purification Chamber!
