Chapter 1605: A Mysterious Archive from the Han Dynasty
Late night.
Night Watch Headquarters.
Lin Qiye, draped in a deep crimson cloak, walked through the empty corridors. Under the pale fluorescent lights, rows of metal shelves stood in neat rows, occupying most of the floor.
At this hour, there weren't many people in Night Watch Headquarters to begin with, and this particular floor contained the organization's most top-secret archives. If Lin Qiye hadn't already been promoted to the upper echelons, he wouldn't have had free access to walk here.
Night Watch's founding and growth, everything that transpired within a hundred years—all of it was contained within this archive room, even more extensive than the archives of Utopia.
Lin Qiye walked straight to the center of the archive room, where a bulky beige desktop computer sat quietly on a work desk.
This computer looked like a relic from the last century, the kind of old junk that even antique recycling stations wouldn't want. Perhaps the only place suitable for it would be an electronic components museum.
But it was this seemingly ancient,笨重的初号机—a massive prototype from another era—that held all of Night Watch's archive sequences.
And throughout all of Night Watch, only five individuals had the authority to use this computer... one was the current Commander-in-Chief, and the other four were department directors whose positions were critically important among the upper management. The Special Operations Department that Lin Qiye now headed was among these.
In the empty, silent archive room, Lin Qiye sat alone in front of the computer and carefully browsed through the records using the internal network's index directory.
It was only then that Lin Qiye truly understood just how vast Night Watch's intelligence network was.
Setting aside Night Watch's internal documents, at the forefront of the index directory were detailed files on all currently living Human Apex and Human Apex candidates—Zhou Ping, Master Chen, Guan Zai, Lu Wuwei...
Personal histories, ability ratings, potential ratings, personality analyses, individual behavioral analyses... each person's file was over a hundred pages. The personal history section even went so far as to detail which opposite-sex classmate they'd had a secret crush on in elementary school, using this as a model to profile their psychological development.
Lin Qiye couldn't fully understand those professional modeling and analyses, but he knew clearly that these archives completely documented their lives.
Moreover, they had classified Human Apex into power and potential tiers. Among all the Human Apex files Lin Qiye had browsed, only "Zhou Ping" had an "S+" rating. "Wang Mian," "Yuzuri Takishiro," and "Guan Zai" had "S" ratings. The rest—including "Lu Wuwei," "Wu Tongxuan," "Master Chen," "Zuo Qing" and others—all fell below S-tier...
As for Lin Qiye himself, since he had broken through just today, the Human Apex rating hadn't appeared yet, but in the Human Apex Candidate directory, there was a prominent "S+" rating next to his name.
Night Watch had always been observing all Human Apex.
What was their potential? Was it possible they would betray Great Xia? What role could they play in wartime... That was the true purpose behind these archives.
Night Watch was the blade protecting Great Xia. The blade's edge had to be aimed not only at enemies beyond the Mist, but also at potential dangers within.
And that wasn't even what surprised Lin Qiye the most...
"There's actually information about Great Xia's gods?!" Lin Qiye's eyes narrowed slightly when he saw a certain section.
This file was much vaguer compared to the Human Apex archives. Even Night Watch's intelligence network couldn't fully ascertain the powers and personalities of every Great Xia deity. Their history was far too ancient to verify...
Lin Qiye didn't know whether this file had been created when Night Watch was searching for traces of Heavenly Court before the Great Xia gods descended, or if... somewhere in their hearts, they were wary of Great Xia's deities?
But thinking about it carefully, this wasn't strange either. Night Watch was an organization belonging to Great Xia, and Great Xia was the Great Xia of countless ordinary people. Before Heavenly Court descended, who could have known whether Great Xia's gods would rule this nation through faith and miracles like the deities of other divine kingdoms?
Mythological legends were, after all, just legends. In that era, it was only reasonable that Night Watch held a skeptical attitude toward the Great Xia gods who hadn't yet descended. But looking at things now, their suspicions had been unnecessary.
Perhaps if the Great Xia gods back then had truly tried to enslave the people and collect faith through power, like Takamagahara's gods had done with the "Human Enclosure"... then Night Watch would have definitely fought them to the death.
Setting aside these tangled thoughts, Lin Qiye began searching for what he wanted.
Among the numerous files, he selected all materials related to [Ethereal Heroes], [Spirit Mediums], [Phoenixes], as well as classified archives from other special departments.
Since he had taken the position of department director, Lin Qiye naturally had to do his job well. Although he had never enjoyed paperwork, if he wanted to manage the entire Special Operations Department, he first needed to understand all the secrets within this department.
Time trickled away. After an unknown duration, Lin Qiye rubbed his tired eye corners and stood up from his seat.
"There's actually this much..." Lin Qiye murmured to himself.
After this period of reading, he had roughly understood the composition of the Special Operations Department and most of its classified secrets. Just as he finished his task and prepared to leave, his footsteps suddenly halted.
After hesitating for a moment, he sat back down at the computer and entered a string of Chinese characters into the archive index bar:
—Asylum of the Gods.
"Empty."
Nothing?
Lin Qiye tried using Night Watch's archive system to search for information related to the Asylum of the Gods, but found nothing.
Lin Qiye sighed. As he pondered what else might be worth searching, an image unconsciously surfaced in his mind—the mysterious little boy who appeared in his thoughts whenever he was on the verge of death...
Every time he approached the brink of death, he would see that mysterious boy who looked very similar to himself. He had also heard from others about how his remnant soul had trapped [Chaos], and in his speculation, this matter was likely also related to that boy.
He stretched out his hands and tried to input index characters, but his expression showed some confusion.
How should he search for this? Little boy? The results would be too numerous to count... How long would it take him to find what he was looking for?
After contemplating for a moment, he entered a string of characters:
—Little boy, Lin Qiye
As Lin Qiye pressed enter, two indexed archive results appeared on the screen.
The first result was probably a file from over a decade ago, originating from Cangnan City, describing a little boy named "Lin Qiye" who claimed to have seen an angel... At the end of this file, there was also an attached link that could directly jump to all archives of Lin Qiye since he joined Night Watch.
This wasn't the result Lin Qiye was looking for.
His gaze passed over this file and continued downward... and then bewilderment appeared in his eyes.
"This file's timestamp... is from the Han Dynasty?" Lin Qiye said in astonishment. "Did the records from the Bureau of Evil Suppression get transcribed into the archives? No, that can't be right... Why would my name appear on a Han Dynasty file?"
Filled with countless questions, Lin Qiye clicked on the second archive.
