Chapter 1539: To Describe
The sudden turn of events left both Li Zhenzhen and Su Zhe stunned.
The canteen owner flashed them a smile, then turned and ran into the campus, his steps light and agile—nothing like a forty-something middle-aged man should move.
"He's been possessed! After him!!"
Li Zhenzhen snapped into action instantly, sprinting after him with Su Zhe close behind.
"All units, be advised: the target has possessed a middle-aged man in his forties, bald, wearing a brown vest, heading toward the lake area." Li Zhenzhen opened her communicator, speaking in a grave tone.
"Received. We're approaching from that direction." Fang Mo's voice came through the communicator immediately after.
The possessed canteen owner ran at incredible speed, weaving nimbly through Shangjing University's campus, using the between-class crowds and his familiarity with the terrain to keep Li Zhenzhen at bay.
In this public setting, Li Zhenzhen couldn't activate her Forbidden Ruins. She could only keep pushing through the crowds, her gaze locked firmly on the canteen owner's retreating figure.
The canteen owner glanced back. As he passed a student, the white shadow inside him slipped out once more, possessing a tall male student instead. The canteen owner was left standing there in confusion, looking around like he'd just seen a ghost.
"Damn it..." When Li Zhenzhen saw the wisp of残魂 switch bodies, she immediately realized the situation had turned dire. If the target kept possessing new people using the crowd density, there was no way she could keep up.
She never expected a simple soul-tracking mission to become this complicated.
"Su Zhe, keep pursuing him!" Li Zhenzhen shouted to Su Zhe, then rushed toward the nearest teaching building, ascending to the top floor as fast as she could. From there, she scanned the crowds below for the target.
It didn't take long to locate the possessed student. After confirming no one was nearby, she reached out and summoned a heart-shaped bow that materialized in her palm.
Li Zhenzhen drew the bow, the heart-shaped arrowhead straining to track the student through the crowd. At this distance, with so many people in the way, she couldn't guarantee a hit. But she had no alternative—delay another few seconds, and the wisp of残魂 would escape completely.
She took a deep breath, about to release the arrow, when a melodious guitar melody drifted from nearby.
"Just like the light rain... in that gray sky... falling on and off, silently soaking the earth~"
A deep, magnetic voice accompanied the guitar notes. Students rushing between buildings paused in unison, turning toward the source of the sound—including the possessed male student.
Li Zhenzhen's fingers on the arrow shaft hesitated, though she didn't release the shot. From the corner of her eye, she spotted the origin of the music, her eyes narrowing slightly.
Under the willow trees by Shangjing University's lakeside, a tall boy cradled a guitar, playing with abandon. His low voice, paired with the falling maple leaves, may not have been loud, but it drowned out the students' chatter around him, making everyone turn and look his way.
"Li Yifei?" An Qingyu, who had been strolling through campus in a wheelchair, spotted the figure beneath the tree. Jiang Er's voice came through her earpiece, sounding utterly surprised. "He can sing?"
An Qingyu blinked. "I remember him—when we were at Cangnan No. 6 Middle School, he was our school's Top Ten Singers champion..."
"Don't say it, he actually sings pretty well."
"Let's go over and take a look too."
Li Yifei's singing seemed to possess a certain magic. The students walking nearby all turned to look at him. Li Yifei had been on the basketball team, with a tall, sturdy build and decent looks. Now, bathed in the atmosphere of the music, his charm skyrocketed, drawing quite a crowd of female students.
The possessed male student also stared blankly in Li Yifei's direction, his expression one of melancholy, as if reminiscing about something.
His lips pressed together slightly, his fingertips下意识 reaching up to brush the hair by his ear. He hesitated, shuffled his feet, then gathered his courage and walked toward Li Yifei.
"Attention—the target has lowered his guard and is moving toward the singing boy by the lake." When Li Zhenzhen saw him slow down, she hesitated for a moment before ultimately stowing her heart-shaped arrow. She spoke into her communicator.
"We've arrived." Fang Mo's voice came through right after. "Proceed carefully this time—don't let him possess someone and escape again."
The reserve team's members blended into the crowd of onlookers, gradually approaching the possessed student.
"Though it always flickers uncertainly,
Sometimes it sparks like stars,
These are words to describe your eyes..."
As Li Yifei noticed more girls gathering around him, the corner of his mouth curved upward. His fingers on the guitar strings grew even more nimble, and his melodious voice carried through the youthful song, eliciting waves of exclamations from the crowd.
The possessed male student squeezed through the people, standing at the very front. He gazed dazedly at Li Yifei playing beneath the maple tree. In his mind, two figures seemed to overlap, and a red flush began to color the corners of his eyes.
Outside the crowd, Lu Menglei walked past with her bamboo sword case slung over her shoulder, a look of longing on her face. She glanced toward Li Yifei before quickly looking away.
Her footsteps gradually slowed.
"...So delicate, not young anymore,
Wanting to gently smooth it over,
These are words to describe your palm..."
These lyrics fell into Lu Menglei's ears, and her steps came to an abrupt halt. Unbidden, her mind flashed back to the warm, rough palm from last night,
the sharp features, and that resolute figure departing the training grounds.
Maybe she had been overthinking things...
At her age, freshly divorced—who would ever be interested in her?
Lu Menglei gave a self-deprecating smile and was about to walk away when a familiar voice spoke from behind her.
"Looks like you're not much of a music fan?"
Lu Menglei's body jolted violently. She turned to look, and that face still fresh in her mind's eye now filled her vision!
The breeze rustled through the maple leaves overhead, like golden snowflakes dancing in the song, scattering gently onto both their shoulders. Cao Yuan held a black case and smiled as he gazed into Lu Menglei's eyes.
"...Forgive me for being unable to resist,
Maybe just one careless glance at you,
Would make me stop mid-sprint,
I only wish technology were more advanced,
To travel back in time and grow up alongside you..."
In the midst of the music and singing, Lu Menglei stood frozen for half a moment. For some reason, her cheeks flushed crimson at an almost visible speed. She stammered slightly as she spoke:
"C-Cao Yuan junior... what are you doing here?"
"I finished my errand and went to the kendo club. They said you'd already left, so I came looking down the path." Cao Yuan reached out and gently plucked a maple leaf from Lu Menglei's hair, saying:
"Still want to practice swordsmanship?"
"...Yes!!"
