Chapter 1511: Aftermath

Lin Qiye stood frozen in place.

"Can't feel your legs?" Lin Qiye snapped back to attention and immediately scanned his body with spiritual power again. "That can't be right... Your legs weren't injured. Why can't you feel them?"

"I don't know... but I really can't feel them anymore." An Qingyu's expression was bitter.

"Don't panic. You just woke up from a coma. Your body hasn't fully recovered yet. I'll have headquarters send someone over in a moment... No, we'll take you to headquarters for a check-up. Their equipment is more complete there."

Lin Qiye spoke very calmly. "Old Cao, you drive. I'll carry Qingyu... Jiang Er, can you fly into the trunk yourself?"

"I can." Jiang Er nodded vigorously.

As Jiang Er's coffin floated up automatically, Cao Yuan grabbed the car keys from the table and quickly walked toward the courtyard.

The temporary vehicle that [Night Watch] team had prepared in Shangjing was originally prepared by Baili Pangpang. It could seat seven people comfortably, with a spacious interior. Even the trunk had been modified to easily accommodate a coffin.

Lin Qiye draped a coat over An Qingyu and carried him directly to the vehicle. The autumn night air in Shangjing was biting cold. An Qingyu, wrapped in a deep crimson cloak and resting on Lin Qiye's back, observed the red taillights flickering in the courtyard, his lips pressing together tightly.

"Seven Nights." he called out softly.

"What is it?"

"If I become disabled in the future, what then?"

Lin Qiye's stride faltered momentarily as he carried An Qingyu forward. His brow creased. "Don't say such foolish things. You're An Qingyu—someone who can regrow a severed head. Two legs can't possibly render you useless.

Even if your legs become worthless, so what? We could get you a wheelchair. Jiang Er has been traveling with us lying in a coffin this whole time. Even if you're in a wheelchair, you're still the vice-captain of [Night Watch]... No one can take your place."

His voice remained unwavering against the cold wind. An Qingyu gazed at his profile, then smiled helplessly after a pause.

"I hope so..."

The [Night Watch] squad's temporary quarters sat quite near headquarters. In roughly twenty minutes, the vehicle pulled up slowly at the main building.

Simultaneously, a support crew had been waiting with a stretcher at the entrance for ages. When Lin Qiye and the others arrived, they moved forward immediately and carefully lifted An Qingyu onto the stretcher, transporting him inside.

Lin Qiye had already contacted headquarters during the drive, so the support and medical departments had prepared everything in advance. An Qingyu was [Night Watch]'s vice-captain and a hero of Great Xia—he deserved this level of care.

Lin Qiye, Jiang Er, and Cao Yuan waited in the corridor, watching An Qingyu being wheeled into the hospital room. As the door closed heavily with a沉闷 sound, the hallway fell into an oppressive silence.

"Jiang Er, don't worry too much. The Heavenly Lord mentioned before that soul injuries produce some aftereffects—nothing serious." Lin Qiye noticed Jiang Er's visible concern and tried to reassure him.

"That's right. Regardless of what happens, the most important thing is that he's awake." Cao Yuan added.

Jiang Er murmured in agreement, "I understand... whatever happens to him, I'll take care of him."

Lin Qiye and Cao Yuan exchanged glances and smiled at each other.

They waited in the corridor for over twenty minutes before a figure in a white coat emerged from the medical room. Lin Qiye recognized him—the deputy director of the Shangjing support department, one of the most accomplished medical professionals in the Night Watch.

"Dr. Zheng, how is it?" Lin Qiye asked.

Dr. Zheng opened his mouth as if about to speak, paused, then gestured for them to enter. "Let's talk inside."

When they stepped into the medical room, Dr. Zheng retrieved several films from the table and arranged them before the group. "We've completed a thorough examination. An Vice-Captain's legs are physically fine."

"Fine? Then why can't he—"

"The loss of leg control stems from his soul. We've used Forbidden Ruins to scan his spirit, but something's off. We can't perceive the full picture of his soul—it seems different from a normal person's."

"I've heard about this from the Heavenly Lord." Lin Qiye acknowledged.

"Without being able to analyze his soul completely, we can't pinpoint the exact issue. Based on what we observe, it appears his soul itself has mutated, causing a disconnect in how it controls his body. This is complicated because modern medicine can't affect the soul. We've tried various special Forbidden Ruins to repair it, but nothing works—his soul is completely immune to external influence. Even with his regenerative abilities or a complete body transplant, this wouldn't resolve the problem."

Lin Qiye's expression darkened as the implications settled in.

"Theoretically, yes."

Lin Qiye's shoulders dropped slightly, a complex mix of emotions crossing his face.

"However... the problems with him extend far beyond this." Dr. Zheng exhaled deeply.

"What do you mean?" Lin Qiye's brow furrowed.

"Come with me." Dr. Zheng led them through an interior door, down a corridor, and into another sealed room. The space was simple—resembling a monitoring center with screens covering the walls, various medical equipment linked to a central control panel.

"Look at this." Dr. Zheng pointed to one particular screen.

The three of them turned to look. The screen showed a small, confined room where An Qingyu and a doctor sat across from each other at a small table. Papers with numbers, symbols, and building blocks were arranged between them.

"What's happening there?"

"Testing." Dr. Zheng explained. "Arithmetic operations, algebraic equations, logical reasoning, and block construction—standard assessments for patients with severe brain trauma, designed to check if their cognitive functions still work."

"Why are you showing us this?" Cao Yuan asked, confused.

Dr. Zheng sighed, then tapped his temple. "Compared to the loss of leg sensation, An Vice-Captain's real serious issue is here..."
