Chapter 139 – Han Shaoyun in the Snowstorm
“The Night Watch squad stationed in Cangnan City…” Han Shaoyun’s gaze swept over the group, and he shook his head. “A third-tier city’s Night Watch squad can’t do anything to me.”
Under the Night Watch’s one-squad-per-city system, the more important the city, the stronger its assigned squad. For example, Squad 006 guarding the capital, Shangjing City, is packed with superhumans all at the “Sea” Realm; their combat power even surpasses some special squads—a true ace unit.
But Cangnan is an ordinary third-tier city, so its Night Watch squad is inevitably limited. Cities of this level are countless across the country. Cangnan is actually better off; in more remote places a whole squad might not contain a single “River” Realm fighter.
In such a city, unless a special squad rushes in, a “Sea” Realm can usually do whatever he wants.
Nationwide, there are only so many “Sea” Realm experts. Who would bother conquering a third-tier city? Even if someone tried, a special squad would arrive within two days to teach him a lesson.
When Lin Qiye saw the 136 squad, joy flashed first, then worry…
If he were alone, he could escape with Nyx’s night-flash. Now, with so many here, how could they run?
Abandon them and flee alone?
Impossible.
After all this time, the 136 squad had become more than comrades in Lin Qiye’s heart. As Leng Xuan once said—this place had become his second home.
He wouldn’t abandon family.
Lin Qiye drew a deep breath, tightened his grip on his blade, and resolve filled his eyes.
Below, Hongying pushed back her dark-red hood, bright eyes smiling at Lin Qiye. She waved cheerfully.
“Little Qiye~ we’re here to rescue you!”
Seeing her laugh so heartlessly in this situation, Lin Qiye’s lips curved. “Idiot…”
He suddenly leaned back, toppling off the roof edge. Just before hitting the ground, his toe tapped and he ghost-flashed to the squad’s side.
Han Shaoyun, long halberd in hand, watched silently without moving.
Lin Qiye stood beside Chen Muye, twin blades ready, and glanced at the unmoving Han Shaoyun.
“Captain, he’s Sea Realm…”
“I know.”
“Can we win?”
“Let’s try.”
“Alright.”
Hearing this, Han Shaoyun on the rooftop shook his head again.
“Two River Realm, four Pond Realm, and one ordinary human… you can’t beat me. Don’t throw your lives away.”
“I recognize you,” Chen Muye said abruptly. “Han Shaoyun, former captain of the Gusu City Night Watch squad.”
Han Shaoyun was silent a moment. “So what?”
“You were a captain—why become a lackey of the Church of the Ancient Gods?” Chen Muye narrowed his eyes.
“You wouldn’t understand.” Han Shaoyun slowly closed his eyes, voice low and hoarse.
“One day, when you watch your teammates die before your eyes… maybe you’ll grasp my choice.”
Chen Muye frowned, about to speak, but Han Shaoyun continued:
“I’ll warn you once more: my target is only that boy. Leave now and I won’t stop you. Don’t die for nothing.”
Chen Muye said nothing.
He didn’t need to—everyone knew his answer.
Leng Xuan’s hand brushed his back; silver flashed and a huge grenade launcher landed on his shoulder. Instantly aimed at Han Shaoyun, he pulled the trigger.
Whoosh—
A grenade shot out, white contrail blazing, straight for Han Shaoyun. He frowned, whirling his halberd.
Boom!!!
Blinding fire erupted. Just as the blast-wave reached him, a fierce wind exploded outward, swirling rooftop snow and flinging the explosion aside.
At the same time, a red-tasseled spear ejected from Hongying’s black case. She caught it, rose flames erupting around her. She kicked off the ground, a streak of rose-red racing toward Han Shaoyun.
Smoke from the grenade mingled with wind-driven snow; a crimson spear-tip flashed.
Han Shaoyun sidestepped lightning-fast. Snow spiraled along his halberd as he swept it at Hongying’s waist.
But the instant before impact, Hongying transformed in his eyes into a thirty-year-old woman in green robes, long hair drifting, eyes tender as water…
Han Shaoyun’s pupils shrank; the halberd froze mid-air.
“Qingqing…” His gaze blurred, then clarity returned. “No… illusion-type Forbidden Ruins?”
On the road below, Wen Qimo’s fingers interlocked in an odd seal. He stared up, eyes gleaming strangely.
Han Shaoyun crushed the vision with surging mental power; the green-clad woman vanished, replaced again by Hongying.
Wen Qimo grunted, cold sweat beading his forehead.
That instant was enough. Hongying twisted her spear, flame-tipped, driving straight for Han Shaoyun’s brow.
His pupils narrowed. He stamped the ground; a ring of wind and snow burst out, flinging Hongying and her spear away. Underfoot, the old building collapsed with a roar.
Han Shaoyun landed steadily in the snow, halberd point down. Wind pushed aside the dust as he strode out…
He stopped across the street, eyes narrowing at the pale Wen Qimo.
“Forbidden Ruins Sequence 180, Heart-Demon Binding…”
Wen Qimo straightened, chuckling. “Not a mighty Ruins, but against someone haunted by inner demons, surprisingly effective.”
“Is that so?” Han Shaoyun said calmly. He lifted his halberd slightly. Across the white expanse, whirlwinds sprang up, lifting snow into the sky, blotting out the light.
Within ten li, wind and snow raged.
“Forbidden Ruins Sequence 079, Great Wind Calamity.”
