Chapter 71
Baili Pangpang
The bodyguards behind the little fatty hurriedly stacked rows of gift boxes neatly beside Lin Qiye’s bed, then lined up in a long file behind their young master.
“Tch, what are you all standing here for? This is a rookie training camp, not your living room.” The little fatty waved them off impatiently. “Go, go, go—get lost, all of you. Don’t let my roommate think I’m the kind of guy who throws his weight around.”
The bodyguards exchanged glances and finally left in resignation.
Only the little fatty remained, seated alone beside a small mountain of presents. He looked down at his clothes, cleared his throat, and parked himself properly by the door.
Lin Qiye scratched his head; the current situation was developing in a way he couldn’t quite understand… After thinking for a moment, he still walked slowly toward his dorm.
When Lin Qiye’s figure appeared at the end of the empty corridor, the little fatty’s eyes lit up. He sprang to his feet, straightened his appearance once more, flashed a neat set of pearly whites, and smiled at Lin Qiye, who was shuffling over in slippers.
Lin Qiye’s expression turned odd; under the fatty’s bizarre stare, he became so awkward he almost forgot how to walk.
Finally, Lin Qiye reached the door.
“Um—”
“Hello! My name is Baili Tuming. I know it’s a bit of a tongue-twister; you can just call me Tuming, or Pangpang!”
Before Lin Qiye could react, the fatty bowed so deeply it scared Lin Qiye into taking two quick steps back.
“I hope we can be friends. For the coming year—please take care of me!”
The whole performance left Lin Qiye completely stupefied.
“A-hem… that, Baili… Baili…” Lin Qiye racked his brains but seemed to have forgotten the last two characters; all he remembered was something like “Pangpang.”
“Baili… Pangpang, you don’t have to be so polite…”
The fatty’s eyes sparkled again; he clearly liked the name Baili Pangpang. “May I have your name?”
“Oh, I’m Lin Qiye.”
“Brother Qiye, I brought some local specialties from home. Nothing valuable—hope you won’t mind.” He cheerfully handed the gift boxes behind him to Lin Qiye one by one.
Lin Qiye swept them with his mental perception and his expression turned marvelous.
“Twelve Rolexes in one box?” He was dumbfounded.
Inside lay a full dozen Rolex watches—Submariner “Hulk,” Explorer, GMT-Master—every style different. If Lin Qiye hadn’t leafed through so many magazines, he wouldn’t have recognized half of them.
A dozen Rolexes packed like a gift set of Red Fuji apples!
“What, Brother Qiye doesn’t like Rolex?” The fatty blinked, set the Rolex box aside, and picked up another. “How about Patek Philippe? I’ve also got Cartier, Carl F. Bucherer… Brother Qiye, I wanted to bring something else, but most things aren’t allowed in camp, so watches seemed best.”
The stack of boxes in Lin Qiye’s arms kept growing. After a long while, he finally asked,
“Baili Pangpang… does your family run a watch business?”
“Nah, we dabble in a bit of everything.” Baili Pangpang laughed. “But don’t get the wrong idea—I’m just an ordinary kid, not some young master from a big clan. I’m very down-to-earth… ah, no, I’m very grounded!”
Like hell you are…
Lin Qiye rolled his eyes inwardly, set the boxes aside, and said, “I don’t want these.”
“Why not?” Baili Pangpang panicked. “Just take them, they’re not worth anything, just a greeting gift…”
“I don’t like accepting gifts.”
“Then… then I…” Baili Pangpang looked at Lin Qiye, then at the boxes in his hands; sweat beaded on his forehead.
Lin Qiye glanced at him and sighed. “Keep them for now. If I ever want them, I’ll ask.”
“Al… alright then.” Baili Pangpang solemnly packed the boxes away, then slowly opened his suitcase and dumped sheets and bedding willy-nilly onto the bed…
Then flopped spread-eagle on top.
Lin Qiye’s mouth twitched. “What are you doing?”
“Going to sleep.” Baili Pangpang patted the crumpled, unidentifiable fabric. “Bed’s made—surprisingly comfy.”
Lin Qiye: …
He wasn’t the meddlesome type, and this chubby guy looked suspicious however you sliced it. To avoid trouble, he simply closed his eyes and pretended to sleep.
After a while, Baili Pangpang quietly sat up and whispered, “Brother Qiye… Qiye~~”
Lin Qiye didn’t stir.
Baili Pangpang cautiously stood, tiptoed to the cabinet, and started rummaging.
What’s this fatty up to…?
Eyes still shut, Lin Qiye kept tracking Baili Pangpang’s every move with mental perception.
Moments later, Baili Pangpang hugged the previously stashed gift boxes, shuffled to Lin Qiye’s bedside, and began gently sliding them one by one under the bed…
Lin Qiye: …
This little fatty… so persistent?!
A mischievous impulse struck; Lin Qiye suddenly opened his eyes and looked at Baili Pangpang.
“What are you doing?”
Baili Pangpang’s whole body jolted; he plopped onto the floor and stared in horror. His not-too-bright brain whirred at top speed…
So, stiff as a board, he scooted to Lin Qiye’s feet…
Sniffed.
“Qiye, your feet smell amazing.”
Lin Qiye: ………………
He was utterly frozen. Clever as he was, he couldn’t think of a single comeback.
What species is this?
Seeing Lin Qiye petrified, Baili Pangpang hesitated, then stretched his own foot toward Lin Qiye and asked carefully,
“Wanna… sniff mine too?”
Lin Qiye’s murderous intent began to stir…
…
Far away, in another building.
Head Instructor Yuan Gang slowly lowered his binoculars, his expression a work of art.
He turned to Instructor Hong, pointed at the two guys sniffing each other’s feet, and drawled,
“So these are the ‘dangerous individuals’ you were talking about?”
Instructor Hong: (?????)
“No, that’s not…” Instructor Hong rubbed his temples. “This is wrong! One’s the proud proxy of the Seraph; the other’s the spoiled young master of the Baili Group… Put them under one roof and it should be a powder keg! Yet they—how did they end up—”
Yuan Gang patted his shoulder and said earnestly, “Hong Hao… to understand someone, you can’t focus only on status and background… There can be countless people with the same pedigree, but temperament and character come in thousands of varieties.”
With that, Yuan Gang turned and left.
Only when he was completely out of Instructor Hong’s sight did he finally lose it, bursting into laughter.
“Interesting…”
