Chapter 2804: The City Falling from the Sky
Xu Huo also planned to go out for a stroll.
Although there were many more law enforcement players patrolling the streets, the number of truly suspicious individuals didn't seem to have increased. The first day of the celebration wasn't particularly different from the previous two days—just more people walking the streets.
During the district-wide celebration, merchants were handing out free gifts as if money were no object: small celebration toys, amusement ride tickets, free samples, and even easily portable accessories like hairpins and hats.
Whether they were locals or not, anyone passing by got a share.
Moreover, even children were given free rein that day. Normally not allowed to eat too much candy, they could now carry candy bags everywhere, sharing with friends, exchanging with other kids, and giving some to adults they liked. The streets were filled with children's laughter.
Xu Huo walked two streets without spending a single cent, but his hands were already full of items.
Zhan Erliu had "gotten separated" from them midway. Zhou Juanjuan and Levi were still with him, both also carrying armfuls of things. Zhou Juanjuan sighed, "If every district could have days like this, how great would that be? With such wealth and peace, who would want to start a war?"
"Yeah," another player resting nearby said, smiling as he watched the river of people flowing past. "With a life this good, starting a war would mean having a screw loose, wouldn't it?"
Xu Huo turned to look. The slightly pale-faced player from another district adjusted the hat the merchant had given him and walked along the street, muttering as he went, "My hometown was like this too—wealthy and peaceful, everyone had food to eat, everyone had books to read. A person would enjoy state welfare from birth until adulthood, and everyone lived well..."
"Is he... a bit off?" Zhou Juanjuan frowned.
Levi was eager, "Should we follow him?"
"Forget it." Zhou Juanjuan thought for a moment. "There are plenty of abnormal players out there."
They couldn't just suspect someone of planning to attack the district just because they seemed a little off.
Several hours into the celebration, the crowds on the streets showed no sign of thinning. Xu Huo and his group couldn't even squeeze into a place to eat, so they had to return to Yongxing Hotel. But just as they set the food on the table, a massive shadow suddenly fell over the city.
The fluctuation of spatial power was impossible to ignore. The three of them immediately walked to the balcony and looked up, only to see the clear sky replaced by a vast expanse of inverted buildings—not just one or two buildings or a small neighborhood, but a continuous, unbroken cluster of structures. Accompanied by crackling sonic booms and the rustling sound of various items falling, the broken streets between the buildings and the overturned lakes in the parks were clearly visible!
This was a city!
A city pouring down from the sky!
Beneath the shadow, screams and cries for help rang out. Defense barriers rose across all streets of the Capital District, warning residents to stay put while law enforcement players rushed to high altitudes to intercept!
Once a player entered the inverted city, its descent nearly came to a halt. But even a gentle collision between two cities would bring devastating destruction. Ordinary defense barriers were utterly useless—instruments, items, even the entire city would cease to exist!
District 022 was clearly well-prepared. One player broke away from the main group and positioned himself between the ground city and the inverted city. The moment he touched a broken building falling from the sky, a black line spanning the entire city appeared. With this line as the boundary, everything that fell seemed to enter an invisible, bottomless void, vanishing without a trace or ripple.
"Damn! That scared the sweat out of me!" Levi finally exhaled. "They're really going all out—starting with a city-wide massacre!"
Not just him—the residents of the Capital District also breathed a sigh of relief at the sight, even bursting into cheers for their players!
But this didn't relax the law enforcement players. Because that city had already emerged from space, and once out, it was hard to push back. No matter how fast the enforcement team moved, they couldn't scoop up the entire city and send it away!
Sure enough, the next second, the two spatial boundaries in the sky disappeared. Not only that, but all the defense instruments in the Capital District failed under the interference. Large-scale spatial defense items and instruments fared no better—they kept malfunctioning when enforcement players tried to intercept falling buildings, becoming an unexpected source of danger instead.
Amidst the screams, Super Evolvers began pushing forward. Their main task was to intercept the falling buildings. Other players weren't idle either—they activated interference countermeasures across the city. Even if they couldn't restore the instruments and items, they had to ensure that the spatial barriers opened by the Super Evolvers weren't disrupted. Meanwhile, more players entered the inverted city, rapidly cutting it apart.
The severed sections were then moved away piece by piece by players.
This method seemed inefficient, but it was currently the safer option. An energy weapon powerful enough to blow up an entire city would inevitably affect the Capital District, while other forms of explosion would generate massive amounts of uncontrollable dust and debris, creating conditions for the attackers.
"From now on, no one is allowed to move!" A player in a trench coat appeared above the Capital District, his voice amplified by an item. "Anyone walking without permission will be executed on the spot!"
"Why aren't you evacuating the crowd!" someone shouted loudly. "Adults might have attackers mixed in, but the children are innocent! Send the children away!"
The voice sounded familiar. Xu Huo looked over and saw it was Bu Chunfeng from the Goodness Sect. He was wearing his self-made religious robes, accompanied by the two families he had traveled with in the forest park earlier. They had clearly come to the Capital District for the celebration.
No one paid Bu Chunfeng any attention. Law enforcement members were already dealing with players from other districts trying to escape and ordinary people running around. Seeing this, Bu Chunfeng shouted even louder, "You can't use teleportation instruments, but what about container items? Don't you have container items prepared? Take the children away!"
"Sir, please calm down," a bystander advised before the enforcement player could respond. "If the enforcement team hasn't arranged an evacuation, it means the situation is under control. Look—isn't the city above slowly shrinking? And nothing has actually fallen and hit anyone. Don't cause trouble for the government right now, okay?"
Bu Chunfeng said nothing more, but looked at the trench coat player with eyes full of extreme sorrow and anger.
It wasn't that they lacked the capacity to evacuate ordinary people, nor was it to minimize damage to the city. The enforcement team was keeping the entire city's population as leverage—using them as bait to attract the enemy's attention!
"The district government... is acting a bit recklessly," Zhou Juanjuan said, her brow furrowed. "How can they guarantee that no attackers will come out and cause trouble in the middle of this? A city crashing down is no joke—its power is comparable to a meteor impact or an earthquake and tsunami."
"They're doing it on purpose," Xu Huo said, his gaze heavy. "There must be other places under attack. Not dealing with the falling city immediately is meant to tie down the attackers lying in wait in the Capital District."
