Chapter 1394: Encountering a Windfall on the Road
Li Kun laughed heartily. "A man must live by loyalty. Am I the kind of person who would burn the bridge after crossing it? Not to mention you saved my life once. I, Li Kun, would never do something like that!"
Xu Huo wasn't necessarily set on getting that tens of millions. He had made other gains in the raincoat cleaner's room, but no one would ever complain about having too many good things.
"I still need to go to the New District Government City," he said. "I'm doing it as a favor for someone."
"You're pretty badly injured. You can wait for me outside the city."
Li Kun genuinely intended to travel with Xu Huo. He waved his hand. "I've recovered quite a bit. It's absolutely no problem. Besides, if we can pull off another job, this trip to Zone 023 will be dripping with riches! In all my time in the game, this should be the most profitable run I've ever had!"
Dai Song naturally had no objection to another person joining them. After he brought out the RV, the group left the city before nightfall.
However, Zone 023 at night sometimes presented unexpected dangers. Although protective measures had been set up nearby, driving at night was too conspicuous. Moreover, mutants were more active after dark. Once the sky was completely black, they were attacked by mutants almost every ten minutes, in varying numbers.
The "Simple Transportation" had defensive capabilities, but there was no need to waste them, so they chose a spot midway to rest.
Resting inside the "Unique Entrance," Xu Huo took stock of the rewards from this instance.
The decent rewards from clearing the instance were two items. One was a B-grade item, "Gently Knock on the Door." Under normal circumstances, this item could guarantee that a knock would open the door, and its scope of application included some high-end locks enhanced with props or advanced technology.
The other was a special prop, "Eye of Identification," a decoration the size of a grain of rice that could be attached to glasses. It allowed the user to determine whether food was human by directly analyzing the texture and structure of the food, making it perfect for identifying food of unknown origin.
In addition, there was an "Indoor Trash Can" that could hold items twice its volume.
The rest were some potions, White Notes, common C and D-grade items, and a snack gift pack as a special reward from the restaurant.
Overall, the rewards for clearing the "Bauhinia Restaurant" instance weren't much.
"Want a couple of sips?" Li Kun handed over a small bottle of wine.
Xu Huo waved his hand and glanced at Dr. Duo Er, whose face was deathly pale. "Can you hold on?"
Dr. Duo Er forced a smile. "I feel much better after drinking the potion..."
But after a pause, he added, "I feel like I don't have long to live."
"Doctor!" Dai Song said in a low, stern voice. "Don't say that... You are the hope of Twin Cities."
Dr. Duo Er, however, said, "The instance no longer exists. Once the players leave, travel between the Primary City and the Secondary City will become easier. Someone new will take my place."
"Doctor..." Dai Song's expression was sorrowful. This wasn't the first time he had seen a "Dr. Duo Er" die before him. Some doctors who knew the inside story could accept death calmly; others, kept in the dark until the very end, never knew they were just a false identity. And every single one of them died carrying the hope of saving Twin Cities. The burden of that hope, coupled with their own frailty, pulled not only at Dr. Duo Er but also at the players of Twin Cities.
"This is good enough." The current Dr. Duo Er was surprisingly open-minded. Lacking energy, he finished speaking and leaned to the side to rest. But unexpectedly, at that moment, a large vehicle suddenly charged in from the entrance of the location prop, heading straight for him!
Dr. Duo Er, who was already teetering on the edge of death, rolled his eyes and immediately fell backward—luckily, Dai Song caught him in time!
But there was no time to worry about him now. Xu Huo pulled out Tangent and sliced the charging vehicle into several pieces. As the shattered car fell, a robot rolled out from the driver's seat.
"A robot. Is this equipment from the New District Government?" Li Kun had just spoken when he immediately dodged the bullets spraying in from the entrance.
Three identical robots walked in, guns raised, firing wildly at everything inside the prop. The bullets they shot could even penetrate a layer of the Space Barrier Xu Huo had set up.
Seeing Xu Huo move behind the robots, Dai Song couldn't help shouting, "These robots all have self-destruct devices!"
But it was too late. The moment Tangent sliced through the robot's body, the detonator inside was activated. The explosion's flames instantly engulfed the entire entrance of the prop, and Xu Huo was forced to retreat.
More than a dozen robots were surrounding the entrance. Xu Huo, now caught in the encirclement, was immediately bombarded!
"Flower Bloom" carved out a safe zone amidst the flying dust. Xu Huo leaped into the air, navigating the relentless barrage of bullets chasing him to get a clear view of the situation outside.
On the main road were three large, sealed transport vehicles. It was unclear what was inside, but each vehicle was guarded by ten robots. Additionally, the drivers were also robots—there wasn't a single living person in this convoy.
Because the "Unique Entrance" had an effect of sealing off the area, Xu Huo had deliberately chosen a spot far from the main road. Judging by the tracks on the ground, the vehicle that had just charged into the prop must have been one that had voluntarily left the convoy to scout. It was just an accident that it had entered the prop, triggering this battle.
Although the robots on the three vehicles didn't leave their roofs, several of them opened their arms and launched miniature homing missiles!
Xu Huo relinquished his ownership of the "Unique Entrance" prop and quickly left from the air, taking two ground robots with him. The robots trailing behind him intercepted the incoming missiles. As the massive explosion lit up the night sky, he had already reached the main road. Raising his hand, he sliced the front vehicle in half!
With a loud crash, a large quantity of ores in various colors spilled out of the vehicle, instantly covering the main road.
"Damn! This is a jackpot!" Li Kun, who had just emerged from the "Unique Entrance," blurted out at the sight. But he was immediately targeted by the nearby robots. Three of the remaining thirteen robots broke off to surround him.
"Underestimating me!" Li Kun laughed and threw a handful of thumb-sized metal balls onto the ground. These balls automatically cracked open upon landing and emitted a blue light. The approaching robots were then jammed, staggering around and firing wildly as if drunk.
Seeing the effect was achieved, Li Kun shouted towards Xu Huo, "Brother, wait for me to come over and help..."
Before the echo of his words faded, a huge explosion erupted from the main road. A mushroom cloud shot into the sky!
The robots that had rushed towards Xu Huo were wiped out in one fell swoop, along with the front vehicle. The flying ores formed a second wave of attack, instantly riddling the rear vehicles with holes and detonating two more robots.
But in the next second, a dense hail of bullets pierced through the smoke and arrived in front of Xu Huo. No matter how he changed his position, the bullets could instantly track him.
"Don't go head-to-head with the robots! Use a jammer!" Li Kun shouted as he moved over from a distance.
