Chapter 2: Alisa (Boiling Red)
The crimson glow of the setting sun spilled across the broken city walls, casting long, distorted shadows. Kukulin Bai Ye stood amidst the rubble, his gaze fixed on the figure before him. She was a young woman, her hair a wild cascade of fiery red, her eyes burning with an intensity that matched the dying light. Her name was Alisa, known among the survivors as "Boiling Red" for the volatile power that simmered within her.
"You're the one they call the Law Destroyer," she said, her voice a low, steady hum that carried an undercurrent of challenge. Her hands were clenched at her sides, faint wisps of steam rising from her palms.
Bai Ye didn't answer immediately. He studied her, noting the way the air around her seemed to shimmer with heat, the ground beneath her feet cracked and blackened. "And you're the one who's been causing chaos in the eastern sector," he replied, his tone flat, almost disinterested.
Alisa's lips curled into a bitter smile. "Chaos? I'm trying to survive. The Abyss Spawn don't care about your rules or your orders. They come, they kill, they consume. I do what I have to."
"By burning down half a block?" Bai Ye's hand rested on the hilt of his blade, the Dragon-Slaying Flash. "Innocent people died."
"Innocent people die every day in this world," she shot back, her voice rising. "I didn't ask for this power. I didn't ask to be a weapon. But if I have to be one, I'll use it to protect what's left."
Bai Ye's eyes narrowed. He could sense the truth in her words, but also the danger. Her power was unstable, a raw, untamed force that could just as easily consume her as it could her enemies. "You're a liability," he said bluntly.
Alisa's expression hardened. "Then what are you going to do about it? Kill me? Like you've killed so many others?"
The air grew heavy, charged with tension. Bai Ye's blade slid from its sheath with a whisper of steel, the edge catching the crimson light. "I'm not here to kill you. I'm here to offer you a choice."
She laughed, a harsh, brittle sound. "A choice? What choice could you possibly offer me?"
"Join me," Bai Ye said, his voice cutting through the silence. "Or face the consequences of your own destruction."
Alisa stared at him, her fiery eyes searching his face for any hint of deception. She saw none. Only the cold, unyielding resolve of a man who had walked through the abyss and emerged with scars that ran deeper than the flesh.
"And if I refuse?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Bai Ye's grip tightened on his sword. "Then I'll do what I must."
For a long moment, neither moved. The wind howled through the ruins, carrying the distant cries of beasts and the faint smell of smoke. Then, slowly, Alisa's hands unclenched, the steam dissipating into the air.
"Fine," she said, her voice heavy with resignation. "I'll follow you. But don't expect me to trust you."
Bai Ye sheathed his blade, turning away. "Trust is earned. And in this world, it's a luxury few can afford."
As he walked into the shadows of the crumbling city, Alisa followed, her footsteps echoing his. Behind them, the sun dipped below the horizon, plunging the world into darkness. But within the heart of the ruins, a new alliance had been forged—fragile, uncertain, but alive.
